Placenta Encapsulation
More and more women and birthing people are learning of the potent healing powers of their placenta and the benefits that come with encapsulating and consuming their placentas every single day. While this is a newer practice to the western world it is deeply ancient and very familiar to the old world.
Due to limited research pertaining to consuming one's own placenta, we encourage women and birthing people to follow their intuition and conduct their own research when wondering and deciding if this is the right practice for them. There are endless amounts of anecdotal evidence and testimonies that support the claims of placenta encapsulation being extremely beneficial during the postpartum period. Let's talk about them!
Benefits
Countless women have claimed the following benefits from consuming their placenta capsules:
-
Increase in energy - believed to stem from high levels of iron
-
Balanced hormones and increase in general happiness
-
Increase in milk production for breastfeeding and pumping

Other credible websites have claims that far fewer women, who consume their placentas, report experiencing baby blues and/or postpartum depression. Countless personal blog pages from mothers also support these claims by sharing their own stories and testimonies of their experiences and journey through postpartum motherhood with the extra help of their placenta supplements. Last but not least, mothers who had encapsulated after one birth but not the other have made claims that they could tell a big difference between their postpartum experiences- with the general consensus being that they had a more positive experience in their fourth trimester when they did consume their placenta supplements.
Is it Safe?
There aren't any studies that have concluded it is unsafe to consume your own placenta. When your placenta has been stored, handled, and prepared properly there aren't any inherent risks to proceeding with ingesting them. In fact, if your placenta has made it home with you that means your medical provider has inspected it and has determined that it is safe to be handled accordingly.

However, as well as with any other high quality and highly sought after product that benefits the majority of it's consumers there is a small percentage of people who do not have a positive experience and reaction to said product. While there is an overwhelming amount of supportive claims advocating for the benefits of placenta encapsulation there is a smaller percentage of people who testify to experiencing adverse reactions to consuming their own placentas. The symptoms reported were jitters and/or an increase in anxiety.
Placenta Tinctures and Salves
Placenta tinctures host the same benefits as placenta capsules, but in a liquid form! A huge plus to placenta tinctures is that they have lifetime shelf supply, therefore, you can reuse them over and over again. Many mothers may use their placenta tincture when they experience a dip in their breastmilk supply, emotionally and mentally difficult days, and a drop in energy. It is not recommended to use your placenta tincture every day but rather as a boost when you need it.
Placenta salves are great for the following uses:
-
Heal and soothe a sore and/or torn perineum
-
Heal and sooth a cesarean incision
-
Soothe diaper rashes and skin irritations
-
Sooth cracked and sore nipples
-
Healing cuts, scrapes and burns
